Chile pepper varieties evolved, we evolved – but it’s interesting to discover the (I think single) mention of chile pepper in Daniel Lieberman’s “The Story of the Human Body. Evolution, Health and Disease“:
“Our species’ evolutionary history was not simple, not all features in the body are adaptations, many adaptations involve trade-offs, and the body’s jumble of different adaptations sometimes conflict with one another. Consequently, it can be difficult to identify what environmental conditions are adaptive and to what extent. For example, how well are we adapted to eating spicy foods?” (p. 171)
